Howard Rheingold’s article on virtual community brings up many interesting subjects worth talking about. One question worth discussing is whether or not a virtual community is a “real” community, or simply another social network. Personally I believe that for some people virtual communities are more real than their lives away from their computers. I believe that a community is anywhere someone goes to be a part of something more. If someone spends his/her time on the internet talking to people they’ve never meet in person, but still considers those interactions as meaningful and important, than who am I to say they are not part of a community. Virtual or not, if someone values the relationships they’ve acquired online then what difference does it make?
