Being successful at networking is easily one of the best ways to stay ahead of the game when it comes to landing a job. Mark Granovetter discusses this method of networking in his article “The Strength of Weak Ties” and it has changed my opinion on who I should “friend” on Facebook. From what i’ve learned, closing yourself off from the outside world and the publicity of the internet greatly weakens your odds of getting the things you want. This is because by cutting yourself off from the internet you’re also cutting off your “weak ties,” which in turn means loosing opportunity. Let’s face it, there are a lot of people in this world. So naturally it makes sense to meet as many people as possible to higher your chances at receiving greater opportunities. In this economy getting a job is hard, maybe even as hard as winning the lottery, so the best way to get yourself ahead of the game is by broadening your social network (or weak ties). With job searching soon becoming my number one priority, I need to start making friends with as many new people as I can.
